Antonio Carmona (b.1999)
As a Mexican-American artist currently studying at the University of Texas at Austin, my work is an exploration of emotional depth and the interplay between the ephemeral and the eternal. Drawing inspiration from the expressive brushwork of Cy Twombly, the poignant narratives of Vincent Valdez, and the whimsical yet profound characters of Yoshitomo Nara, my art navigates the delicate balance between abstraction and representation.
The fluidity of color and form in my pieces reflects a dialogue with nature, inspired by the way light and atmosphere can transform a scene. I am captivated by how these elements reveal hidden layers of meaning and emotion. In contrast, the masterful techniques of Rembrandt both inspire and inform my understanding of light and shadow, enabling me to create depth and resonance in my work.
As a Mexican-American, I am particularly attuned to the rich cultural narratives that inform my identity. The timeless beauty of Ancient Greek and Renaissance sculptures inspires my commitment to craftsmanship and form, compelling me to examine the human experience through a contemporary lens that honors my heritage while merging historical reverence with modern sensibilities.
My artistic journey is a constant reflection of my personal experiences, aspirations, and the world around me. Each piece serves as a vessel for storytelling, inviting viewers to engage with the layers of emotion and thought that reside within. Through my art, I aim to evoke a sense of connection and contemplation, encouraging a deeper understanding of ourselves and our shared humanity.
